The Learning Center at Familysearch.org

Welcome to this weeks SCDL's Tree Talk Tuesdays Blog Post. This week we are looking at an exciting feature at Familysearch.org. Did you know that Familysearch has a Learning Center on their website where you can view Genealogy Courses that will help with tracing the family tree? They do and its FREE!

From beginning genealogy to researching overseas familysearch has a course for you. To get started go to www.familysearch.org/learningcenter.  Once the page has loaded there are couple of options for searching for courses. On the right side of the screen you will see a series of featured classes. You can choose any that looks interesting to you.

Another option is in the purple box on the left side of the screen titled " What course are you looking for?" Below the titled you can choose a specific county, skill level, format, subject or subject language.

The third option for choosing a course is to simply type in what you are looking for. In the box provided at the top of the screen, type in what you are looking for (I choose Scotland) and then click search. The next screen you will see looks like the image below. The search narrowed down two 4 results for Scotland ( only two will show in the screen shot below.) From this screen I choose ScotlandsPeople.org.

After clicking on the blue link next to the image for the course. The course page will open (shown below). On the course page you will find the video of the course as well as course supplements (handouts, feedback ect.). The handouts are a PDF that you can print out and take notes on while watching the video.

I hope you this to be helpful in your research. Until next week Happy Hunting!

The workshop with be held at the North Canton Public Library. Stephanie will help members of the community research their families’ genealogy. She will explain how to get started, use several online tools, and explain the array of tools available at the Stark County Library. Participants should either bring their own laptop computers or they may borrow one of several available for their use from the North Canton Library.
The workshop is free, but reservations are necessary and can be made by calling the North Canton Heritage Society at 330-494-4791 or e-mailing ncantonheritage@sbcglobal.net. Please indicate if you need one of the borrowed computers.

Then on Saturday, October 19th at the Plain Community Branch we will continue on with our Saturday Series. This week the topics are Genealogy Databases @ SCDL and Genealogy Computer Programs. During the Genealogy Databases Program we will be looking at Ancestry.com, Heritage Quest, and Family Search. We will also be previewing the new database World Vital Records. During the Genealogy Computer Programs we will look at various softwares that are available for you to help record all the family information that you discover! If you haven't register yet, there is still time! Simply go to http://www.starklibrary.org/program-search

Tip of the week-  Using an * after the first three letters of name will search for multiple spellings and miss spellings of a name. For example...Joh* will bring up Johnston, Johnson, Johnstone, Johnmyer, Johan...This type of search keep the first letters exactly the same, but allows for any combitation of letters after it.

Happy Hunting!

Genealogy Gets New Equipment

Welcome to this weeks Tree Talk Tuesday.  Exciting news from the Genealogy Department this week.  We recently recieved a  new digital microfilm scanner to our department.  It is a new for this year, hot off the assembly line.

With it we can scan things from any of our microforms collection to a digital image which can then be saved to a flash drive, emailed to patrons, added to web pages, etc.

I hear some of you asking, “Couldn’t you do that already?”  Well yes, we could.  This machine makes it a lot easier and gives us much better editing capabilities.

And the truly best part about all this is that the old machine we were using for this purpose has been moved to the microfilm reading room for patrons to use.  Now they can copy their own digital images to a flash drive instead of having to make hard copies, take them home, and scan them into their computer.

So tell your friends, tell your neighbors, but most espcially start sending in your record requests or  stop by and see it in action.

Have a great week!

Ohio at Gettysburg

This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most famous and deadliest battles of the American Civil War. It also served has the inspiration behind Abraham Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address.  The battle began on July 1, 1863 when General Robert E. Lee made his second attempt to invade the north. It lasted for 3 days and is often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion". By the 3rd day the General George Mead's Union Army had stopped the invasion, but not without a price. There were 51,000 casualties and much devastation to the people and property surronding the town of Gettysburg.

During the Battle of Gettysburg Ohio had 4,400 soliders who fought and according to Richard A. Baumgartner's book "Buckeye Blood: Ohio at Gettysburg" nearly 30 percent of them were killed, wounded or captured. Did you have ancestors who served at Gettysburg?

Canton Lumber Company

Welcome to this week's SCDL Tree Talk Tuesday. Today we are showcasing this great photo that we recently aquired. While we don't know who the individuals are in the picture, we do know that it was probably a "float" that was used for the July 4th Parade in 1913 in Canton, Ohio.
The Canton Lumber Company was organized in 1901, with the office and yard being located at 601-613 E. North St. (which is now 6st. NE). In 1929 the company went into receivership.

June is the Month for Weddings!

Welcome to this weeks Tree Talk Tuesday. So glad you stopped by. This week we put up a display in the department on Marriage, since the month of June is popular for weddings. So to coincide with that the topic for this weeks post is....Marriage Records!

Marriage Records can be a great source for finding more information about your family. Where do you find these records? There are two type of records that one may find when reaserching marraiges. A Civil Record or a Church record. The civil record of marriage will be recorded with a govermental office such as the probate court, clerk of courts etc. The church record will be housed with the church or minister that handled the marriage.

For Stark County the marriage records begin when the Probate Court was form in 1809. Pre 1900 records only list the couple who were married and who married them. After 1900 you will find a bit more information on the record. This may include who took out the license and sometimes a relative could be mentioned if the person is a minor. After 1910 the marriage records look more like they do currently. They give the name of the bride and groom, where they were born, how old their are, their residence at the time of the license being taken out, their parents names, if they have been divorce and if so minor children are listed.

In todays world the question that often arrises, can I find these records online? Yes and No. One place you can check for marriage is Familysearch.org   They have filmed some Ohio County Marriage Record books and indexed them on their website. The website is free to use and you can print the record you find.

I hope this information was helpful until next week!

Stark County's Estate Files

Thanks for returning to check out this week's post on Tree Talk Tuesdays.  Did you know  that the first offical Estate Record was filed on April 2, 1810 and didn't close until May 24, 1827?   It's true. It was the estate of Jacob Loutzenhesier and we have it here at the library.

The Genealogy Department at the Stark County District Library houses the Stark County Probate Court Estate Packets  from 1810-ca. 1920.  We also have them on microfilm from 1810-ca. 2007. Estate files can be a wealth of knowledge not only for researching family relationships, but also for tracing property both personal and real estate.

If you had a ancestor who died in Stark County between 1810-2007 and would like to search or have a search done of these records you can simply visit the Genealogy Department or use our online request forms found at the following link. http://www.starklibrary.org/requestforms

(The index to these records can be found at the Stark County Probate Court Website https://probate.co.stark.oh.us)

Until next week...Happy Researching!

Remember the Ladies

Welcome to this week's Tree Talk Tuesdays! It has been 5 weeks that we have been at this blog now. I hope you have been enjoying them. In honor of this month being Mother's Day we have a display in the Genealogy Department titled "Remember the Ladies-Abigail Adams 1776"

Tracing the female line of your Genealogy often times is a one of those brick walls we all run into. So what do you do when all you can find is an entry that says "Mrs. John Smith'? We have several books in our collection that can help you break through those brick walls.

Family Reunion Planning

Greetings! I hope you all have been enjoying the post for SCDL's Tree Talk Tuesdays. This week I would like to turn our attention to our Circulation Collection. The Genealogy Department has a number of items within the circulating colleciont that can help you get started in Planning A Family Reunion, Beginning a Family Tree and breaking through brick walls. Today, we will be looking at Planning a Family Reunion.
Each year my husband's family hold their reunion at Tuscora Park in Dover, Ohio. We pack up the picnic basket, and the kids and drive about 1/2 south to get there. The kids are excited because of all the fun things there are to do at Tuscora Park and  we are excited because we get to visit with family members that we haven't seen in awhile.
Have you thought about planning a family reunion, but don't know where to start? The book "Your Family Reunion: How to Plan It, Organize It, and Enjoy It"  by George G. Morgan is  a great resource for planning a reunion from a few people to a lot of people. Check it out today!

Want to know other sources, there is a bibliography of other resources available at the library that will help you plan your next family reunion.

Have a great  week!

Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society

This week our focous is on the Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genelaogical Society.

The Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society or S.C.C.O.G.S. was formed in 1973 and is  a great support of the Genealogy Department at SCDL. Some of those sources include; The Stark County Cemetery Inscriptions, Member's Ancestor Charts, Stark County, Ohio Death Records 1867-1908 and a Portrait and Biographical Record of Stark County, Ohio. They also publish a quarterly newsletter that is available to their members and at the library.

Located on the upper level, the Genealogy Department is open the same hours as the Main Library. Our collection consists of local sources including Stark County Courthouse records, local histories, newspapers, census, and much more. We collect on the entire state of Ohio, as well as, selected records for the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusettes, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

In addtion, we have trained staff members who are able to assist you in your family history research. If you are unable to visit in person, you may also write or e-mail us by using our convienent online request forms.
