Greetings! As I had mentioned in my first post, we will be talking about not only sources and the happenings in the Genealogy Department at SCDL, we will also be looking at what is going on in the Genealogy Commuinty. This week our focous is on the Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genelaogical Society.
The Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society or S.C.C.O.G.S. was formed in 1973 and is a great support of the Genealogy Department at SCDL. Over the years they have published great resources that have helped many trace their famllies in Stark County. Some of those sources include; The Stark County Cemetery Inscriptions, Member's Ancestor Charts, Stark County, Ohio Death Records 1867-1908 and a Portrait and Biographical Record of Stark County, Ohio. They also publish a quarterly newsletter that is available to their members and at the library.
The chapter hold regular monthly meetings beginning at 6:30p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Next month, their meeting time has changed because they will be going on a field trip to the Massillon Museum on Saturday, May 11th. For more information on the society and their events please visit their website. www.starkcountyogs.org
Have a great week!

St. Joseph Catholic School of Canton
In this week Tree Talk Tuesday, we are focusing on St. Joseph Catholic School of Canton. The parish of St. Joseph is located at 2427 Tuscarawas St. W. It was organized on June 15, 1902 and it's first mass was held at Benksin' Hall on the corner of West Tuscarawas Street and Harrison Ave. In August of that same year ground was broken for a combination school and church building. The present building was completed a year later.
The school and parish continued to thrive and reached it's highest enrollment of students (nearly 1,000) in the 1960's. The Genealogy Department recently was given three photopraphs of elementary students from St. Joseph School. Some of the photographs have names associated with them others don't. If you are able to help identify any of these individuals we would love to hear from you.

National Library Week
Welcome to SCDL's Tree Talk Tuesdays! This week is National Library Week here at SCDL and we are focusing on learning about some of the services available at the library. So without further ado, lets talk a moment about the Genealogy Department.
Did you know that the library maintains a department where you can learn more about the history of your family as well as your town? We do! Located on the upper level, the Genealogy Department is open the same hours as the Main Library. Our collection consists of local sources including Stark County Courthouse records, local histories, newspapers, census, and much more. We collect on the entire state of Ohio, as well as, selected records for the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusettes, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
In addtion, we have trained staff members who are able to assist you in your family history research. If you are unable to visit in person, you may also write or e-mail us by using our convienent online request forms.
In future Tree Talk Tuesday posts, we will be discussing more in depth about research resources available to you, as well as other items of interest in the world of Genealogy. Until next Tuesday, have a great week!
