Gearing up for Family History Month

Welcome to this week's Tree Talk Tuesdays. September is a busy month in the Genealogy Department at SCDL as we are gearing up for Family History Month. Typically the month of October is set aside as Family History Month each year and we celebrate by having programming all month long. This year the programs will held at the North Branch Library on Monday evenings and the Plain Branch on Saturday afternoons. Then to wrap the month we will hold the 4th Annual Diggin' in the Dark: Genealogy After Hours Program on October 26th at the Main library.  So, whether you are a beginner or have been researching for years we hope to see you in October!

Beginning Genealogy Class

Welcome to SCDL's Tree Talk Tuesdays Blog. This is the fourth week in the return of Who Do You Think You Are. How many of you have been watching it and how many of you have caught the bug of wanting to dig further into your Genealogy or just start it? This week I (Stephanie), from the Genealogy Dept. here at Main will be teaching a Beginning Genealogy Class at the East Canton Branch from 2-3:30. Whether you are a seasoned veteran of researching or just beginning, there is something for you in the class. We will be discussing how to organizing your research, how to fill out charts and forms to help you keep organzed and on task. We also will be discussing what types of records and websites are available to help you with the research process. Unlocking the Secrets of the Cemetery Program

Thanks for stopping by this week's SCDL Tree Talk Tuesdays Blog. We have an exciting upcoming program here at the Main Library called "Unlocking the Secrets of the Cemetery." The program will be held on August 21, 2013 from 2-3:30pm. See below for information about the program and how to register for it.

    Kim Kenney, Curator at the McKinley Presidental Library and Museum, will be giving the presentation. She has a passion for cemeteries and the following is her descritpion of the program. "Cemeteries have a special language of their own, spoken through the symbols carved on tombstones. Using photos from cemeteries across the country, this program explains the orginials of the "rural cemetery movement" in the mid-19th Century" 

    Kim was recently awarded the Oakley Certificate of merit from the Association of Gravestone Studies for her interpretive projects at West Lawn Cemetery.

German Research Workshop to be held in September at the WRHS

Welcome to this week's SCDL Tree Talk Tuesdays. How many of you have German anestry in your line and how many of you have hit a brick wall in that research? I know that I have! I wanted to share an upcoming program that will be held at the Western Reserve Historical Society on September 14, 2013.

  The event is called "Researching German Ancestors" and the lecturer will be Warren Bittner, CG. Mr. Bittner will be presenting 5 talks about breaking down your brick walls in German Research. The schedule for the day is as follows;

Genealogy Gets New Equipment

Welcome to this weeks Tree Talk Tuesday.  Exciting news from the Genealogy Department this week.  We recently recieved a  new digital microfilm scanner to our department.  It is a new for this year, hot off the assembly line.

 

 

With it we can scan things from any of our microforms collection to a digital image which can then be saved to a flash drive, emailed to patrons, added to web pages, etc.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 I hear some of you asking, “Couldn’t you do that already?”  Well yes, we could.  This machine makes it a lot easier and gives us much better editing capabilities. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And the truly best part about all this is that the old machine we were using for this purpose has been moved to the microfilm reading room for patrons to use.  Now they can copy their own digital images to a flash drive instead of having to make hard copies, take them home, and scan them into their computer.

 

 

So tell your friends, tell your neighbors, but most espcially start sending in your record requests or  stop by and see it in action.

Ohio at Gettysburg

      This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most famous and deadliest battles of the American Civil War. It also served has the inspiration behind Abraham Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address.  The battle began on July 1, 1863 when General Robert E. Lee made his second attempt to invade the north. It lasted for 3 days and is often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion". By the 3rd day the General George Mead's Union Army had stopped the invasion, but not without a price. There were 51,000 casualties and much devastation to the people and property surronding the town of Gettysburg.

   During the Battle of Gettysburg Ohio had 4,400 soliders who fought and according to Richard A. Baumgartner's book "Buckeye Blood: Ohio at Gettysburg" nearly 30 percent of them were killed, wounded or captured. Did you have ancestors who served at Gettysburg?

The Return of "Who Do You Think You Are" on TLC

It's that time again for SCDL's Tree Talk Tuesdays. The big buzz in Genealogy this week is the return of Who Do You Think You Are? on TLC. For three consecutive seasons both Genealogist and Non-Genealogist tuned in on Tuesday evenings to watch American Celebraties trace their family trees. A year late TLC annouced that it would be picking it up. The new season will feature Christina Applegate, Kelly Clarkson, Cindy Crawford, Zooey Deschanel, Chelsea Handler, Chris O’Donnell, Jim Parsons and Trisha Yearwood researching their family trees. Mark your calendars for July 23rd for the Season Premier!
