What's New "What Did They Mean By That" by John Drake J.D

Welcome to this week's Tree Talk Tuesday. As Genealogists we are always on the hunt through court records, cemeteries, family bibles, county histories and various other resources in hopes of finding that next branch of our family tree. Often times when while we are doing this, we come across a word or phrase that sound odd to the modern ear. So, then our hunt turns to finding out more about what that odd word or phrase meant and in this week's Tree Talk Tuesday blog post we are focusing on just that.




Recently the Genealogy Department  has added two books by Paul Drake J.D, title "What Did They Mean By That" and "More What Did They Mean By That". Mr. Drake created these books to help Genealogists in their search for understanding phrases, abbreviations and definitions of words that come up in Historical records and texts. 

The following is a sample of an abbreviation from the book;

"7br: or 7ber= September" (pg xiv)
"fower"= four (4) (pg xii)





 
Here is another example showing the definition of a word from the book;

"dorseteen, dorsetine:  a cloth or fabric, probably now unknown, e.g. "in 1798 Kuhn & Risberg of Philadelphia advertised 'assorted silk, camblets (q.v.) hairbines and dorsteens for sale""(pg. 94)



Both of these books are organized alphabetically making searching for a term or phrase simple. Currently the department has two copies of each of these. One set circulates (you can check them out) and the other set is "library use only." So next time you come across a odd word, abbreviation or phrase you may want to check out these resources.

Genealogy Programs: October is Family History Month

    Welcome to this week's SCDL Tree Talk Tuesday. It's that time of year when we  turn out attention to celebrating Family History Month. We have been busy here in the Genealogy Department putting together some exciting programs to help you learn about the many resources available to help you trace your family history. Whether you are a beginner or have been researching for years there something for everyone!

    Below you will find all the programs for the month of October. The Learning Center at Familysearch.org

Welcome to this weeks SCDL's Tree Talk Tuesdays Blog Post. This week we are looking at an exciting feature at Familysearch.org. Did you know that Familysearch has a Learning Center on their website where you can view Genealogy Courses that will help with tracing the family tree? They do and its FREE!

From beginning genealogy to researching overseas familysearch has a course for you. To get started go to www.familysearch.org/learningcenter.  Once the page has loaded there are couple of options for searching for courses. On the right side of the screen you will see a series of featured classes. You can choose any that looks interesting to you.


Another option is in the purple box on the left side of the screen titled " What course are you looking for?" Below the titled you can choose a specific county, skill level, format, subject or subject language.



The third option for choosing a course is to simply type in what you are looking for. In the box provided at the top of the screen, type in what you are looking for (I choose Scotland) and then click search. The next screen you will see looks like the image below. The search narrowed down two 4 results for Scotland ( only two will show in the screen shot below.) From this screen I choose ScotlandsPeople.org.

 
 
After clicking on the blue link next to the image for the course. The course page will open (shown below). On the course page you will find the video of the course as well as course supplements (handouts, feedback ect.). The handouts are a PDF that you can print out and take notes on while watching the video.

Family History Month Wrap Up

Welcome to this week's Tree Talk Tuesdays Blog. It's been a busy month here in Genealogy and as we come to the end of Family History Month we wrap up with a night of celebration! It's that time of year again when we hold our annual Diggin' In the Dark: Genealogy After Hours program.

This year's program will be held Saturday, October 26 from 6pm-midnight at the Main Library. It's a night for you to come discover details of your ancestry as well as  mingle and share with fellow researchers. No previous genealogy experience is required. The only requirment is that you pre-register. To register simply click the image to the left and you will be taken to the registration page. Only a few spots remain so make sure to register today! There is a waiting list if registration fills up.


This year we are also excited about our special guest speaker that will be coming Jana Broglin CG, OGSF. Jana will be teaching a class title "Organization 101. Confessions of a True Pile-It".This class will be great for learning how to organize your Genealogy Research!.

A little background information on Jana Broglin. She is a native of northwestern Ohio, and has been a speaker on genealogical topics at the local,s tate, regional and national conferences. She is a professional genealogist with over 30 years of experience and specializes in Ohio research.
Jana became a Certified Genealogist in November 2004. In april 2011, she became a Fellow of the Ohio Genealogical Society. Both result in the additions of CG and OGSF after her name.

North Canton Heritage Society and More!

Welcome to this week's SCDL Tree Talk Tuesday's Blog Post. We are continuing on with Family History Month. So far we have taught classes on Beginning Your Research, Organizing Your Research, Find your family in the Census, Using the Ohio Court Records, Finding Records Online and Tracing Your Stark County Ancestors Using Land Records. Thank you to all who have attended so far!

On Wednesday 10/16 Stephanie Houck from our Genealogy Department with be teaching a Beginning Genealogy Workshop for the North Canton Heritage Society in conjuction with the Smithsonian Exhibition Journey Stories. The workshop with be held at the North Canton Public Library. Stephanie will help members of the community research their families’ genealogy. She will explain how to get started, use several online tools, and explain the array of tools available at the Stark County Library. Participants should either bring their own laptop computers or they may borrow one of several available for their use from the North Canton Library.
The workshop is free, but reservations are necessary and can be made by calling the North Canton Heritage Society at 330-494-4791 or e-mailing ncantonheritage@sbcglobal.net. Please indicate if you need one of the borrowed computers.


Then on Saturday, October 19th at the Plain Community Branch we will continue on with our Saturday Series. This week the topics are Genealogy Databases @ SCDL and Genealogy Computer Programs. During the Genealogy Databases Program we will be looking at Ancestry.com, Heritage Quest, and Family Search. We will also be previewing the new database World Vital Records. During the Genealogy Computer Programs we will look at various softwares that are available for you to help record all the family information that you discover! Tip of the week-  Using an * after the first three letters of name will search for multiple spellings and miss spellings of a name. For example...Joh* will bring up Johnston, Johnson, Johnstone, Johnmyer, Johan...This type of search keep the first letters exactly the same, but allows for any combitation of letters after it.

October is Family History Month

Welcome to this weeks SCDL Tree Talk Tuesday! It's that time of year when, the leaves begin to change, nights get cooler and best of all we celebrate family! October is Family History Month and as I mentioned last post, we here in the Genealogy Department have an entire month of family history programing to celebrate! Check back here at the blog often for tips, tricks and what classes are being offered during the week to help you build your family tree.

To kick of the month long celebration. Lauren Landis  will be teaching two classes on Saturday, October 5th at the Plain Community Branch. The first class will be "Genealogy Basics." It will be from 1-2:30. During this session you will earn how to organize and begin to trace your family tree. Please bring any family information you may have, because you will using charts and forms during the class.
The second class will be "Using the Federal Census Effectively" This sesssion will be from 3-4:30pm and will cover what you can find both written and implied about your family using the census records.



Can't make Saturday's program? Then join us Monday evening as we explore   "Digging Up Your Roots @ SCDL"  This class will be taught by Stephanie Houck  and will be held Monday, October 7th at North Branch from 6-7:30pm.   During the class you will learn what the Genaelogy Collections holds and how it can help in researching your family tree. Whether you are just beginning or you have been  researching for years, we encourage you to attend this program. We have many great and wonderful resources and are all FREE for you to use.

Gearing up for Family History Month

Welcome to this week's Tree Talk Tuesdays. September is a busy month in the Genealogy Department at SCDL as we are gearing up for Family History Month. Typically the month of October is set aside as Family History Month each year and we celebrate by having programming all month long. This year the programs will held at the North Branch Library on Monday evenings and the Plain Branch on Saturday afternoons. Then to wrap the month we will hold the 4th Annual Diggin' in the Dark: Genealogy After Hours Program on October 26th at the Main library.  So, whether you are a beginner or have been researching for years we hope to see you in October!
